Bangkok is going to become the most visited city in the world

Bangkok will be the most visited city in the world in 2013, according to the latest data indicated by MasterCard.

Publishing the results of its third annual index of global destination cities, MasterCard revealed that the Thai capital should receive 15.98 million international visitors this year 2013, which is slightly more than London placed second, which will host 15,96 million visitors.

Paris ranks third with 13.92 million visitors, 11.75 million for fourth ranked Singapore and New York fifth with 11.52 million. Istanbul, positioned in sixth place with 10.37, is it is the last city that expects to receive more than 10 million international visitors in 2013.

MasterCard noted that the rise of Bangkok at the head of the world tourism rankings has coincided with a larger increase in the popularity of Asian cities. Kuala Lumpur (eighth, 9, 20 M) and Hong Kong ninth 8. 72 M) also made parts of the top of the standings, while Seoul (11th, 8, 19 M), Shanghai (14, 6, 50 M), Tokyo (16th 5. 80 M) and Taipei (18th, 5, 19 M) helped Asia to get 9 of the 20 most visited cities in the world in 2013.

"Bangkok has brought with it a big boost last year. His ascension as the number one is not only a first for Asia, it is emblematic of the rise of the 'global South' which encompasses much of Africa and Asia as well as South America ", concluded Dr. Yuwa Hedrick-Wong, MasterCard global economic advisor and author of the report.

One of the main reasons for the increase in Asian cities, is increasing air connectivity in the region. For the measurement of the growth of the air connectivity between 2009 and 2013, MasterCard noted that seven of the 10 most dynamic cities were in Asia from the East, including Singapore, Seoul and Bangkok.

But Asian cities are still the way to go to catch up with the West in terms of levels of visitor spending. New York topped the world list in terms of spending by visitors in 2013, generating revenues of $ 18.6 billion, before London (16.3 billion U.S. dollars) and Paris (14.6 billion US dollars). Bangkok with US $ 14.6 billion finished fourth and Singapore with 13.5 billion US $ finished fifth.
