Myanmar seeks the 3 million tourists for 2015

Myanmar (Burma) is the new trend in Southeast Asia and the country now targets the number of tourist arrivals to 3 million by 2015, is almost triple the figure obtained in 2012, according to the official media.

This announcement came after a meeting between Htay Aung, Minister of hotels and tourism of Myanmar and Ambassador of Norway Katja Nordgaard to Naypyidaw.

A master plan for the tourism industry of Myanmar, funded by the Asian Development Bank and the Norwegian Government, is currently being developed and will be presented at the World Economic Forum to Naypyidaw early in June.

Speaking at a conference on tourism in Yangon in February, Minister Htay Aung had stated that the growth in the industry would be full of difficulties and issues such as transportation, human resources, infrastructure development, as well as the preservation and the creation of destinations need to be addressed.

"We need the help of investors, organizers, business partners and practitioners in the future and that they come to see the opportunities that we have, so that we can begin to work together for our mutual benefit" the Minister said.

The latest government figures follow several projects implemented in the private sector of tourism of Myanmar.

He also discussed plans to develop infrastructure and conservation of the environment in the Inlay Lake.

Myanmar has attracted more than 1 million foreign tourists in the country in 2012, an increase of 200,000 tourists compared to the figures of 2011, due to significant changes in Myanmar during the year.

Meanwhile, international tourists agencies wish to fully exploit Myanmar as a tourist destination while the tourism industry of the country is improving.

Many foreign visitors will visit Myanmar to attend the 27th South Asian Games at the end of this year and for the Summit of ASEAN and other related summits next year.

Myanmar provides also several new hotel zones to increase the accommodation capacity.

The existing hotel zones in Myanmar are Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay, Bago, Rakhine, Mawlamyine, Bagan, Taunggyi, Chaungtha, Golden Triangle and Ngwe Saung.

At present, there are more than 36 hotels with foreign investment, some of which are under construction.
